Hints on writing an entry
The first thing you want to do is make a list of the accomplishments the individual or ship has done during the year. This is important so that you do not leave out any pertinent information. Just write it down in a column so you don’t miss anything. Make sure to give all of the important information. List dates, events, what was done. Be specific as to what duties or action were performed. State what EXACTLY this person did that was deserving of the award. (Include relevant details or examples). You want to list when they chaired an event, or volunteered in the community, or helped a fellow member. Write down EVERYTHING. Describe the activities, projects and events sponsored or hosted by the member/chapter that promoted “fun” for the chapter members. Cite specific examples of effective leadership, planning and execution of events. Talk about how the person/ship promoted the basic philosophy of Star Trek and a positive vision for the future.
Make sure to be honest – don’t do a disservice to yourself, the person, or the group you are recommending by including misinformation.
It will help if you can find a volunteer on your chapter that is a writer, or even someone that was good in school with writing assignments. They usually are very good at taking information and placing it in a story format. If you are a good writer, please offer up assistance in writing the nomination. Take it one sentence at a time. If you need help, contact the R7 Awards Director.
The awards judges have no knowledge of the person you are recommending or what they have done that is outstanding. It helps to explain why this person deserves the nomination.
You want to make sure you have the correct Name, Rank, SCC#, and Chapter of the person you are recommending. Missing information can hurt your submission.
More than anything else, have fun. You know the people on your ship better than anyone else. You know what they have done to make meetings and social times into fun times. Just tell us so we can acknowledge their accomplishments.
You never know…but you have to be in it to win it.
